just had a chance to listen properly (also on a decent pair of cans as i had to repair the jack plug on them) both are good tracks but I see no reason why you should not produce both genres, as many others do… also original vocals are often what distinguishes one track from another.
A few weeks ago I was joking with a friend of mine (who DJs more of soulful house) that some EDM tracks were becoming too electronic/minimal – that same weekend I was working on my phone system at home whilst listening to PVR house stream… (I was once a broadcast engineer but moved to telecoms/IT support after the economic depression as there is more paid work there – and I collect 1970s to 1980s era British telephones and associated equipment.
Anyway one track was played that had samples what genuinely sounded so much just like a howler / off hook tone (the harsh sound you get if you leave an analogue phone off the hook) I thought I’d made a wiring error, or knocked over one of the old style phones off the hook, and it had me cursing and searching up the entire workshop for a while (to find which phone/circuit was faulty) until I turned off the speakers and realised what it was..
So I definitely I prefer more vocal / tuneful sounds (whether its progressive/electro or more uptempo trance)…
Cool, and thanks so much for taking the time to type all that out! Thats the kind of feedback we need to hear… we’re practicing instrumentals with this EP because the last one was so vocal heavy, and we didn’t get enough practice leveling and EQing as we went along… so this is kind of “preparation” work for later projects.
Also, I agree with what you said about EDM going too minimalist/electronic lately! I am definitely a big fan of melodic/MUSIC LIKE MUSIC (haha) rather than overuse of too many harsh or strange sounds just to make someone go, “wtf”…. I think we’re going to try to aim to combine the style of these two instrumentals with original vocals, when we’re confident that we can get the instrumental parts perfectly right! (:
Thanks again, take it easy!

is the person giving the criticism an older male? this is a rather creepy domination/control technique used within the creative industries to groom younger females (both juvenile and adult).
The offenders can be quite friendly/pleasant but when they encounter a more stronger, confident girl/woman who asserts herself start getting abusive.
Its a big problem especially in creative organisations – in the UK a very large number of older celebrities have recently been arrested and investigated for this kind of behaviour dating back to the 1960s and the national BBC is under global scrutiny due to issues regarding severe bullying of staff especially younger workers and females, and its happening on places like the highbrow intellectual radio news shows, not just in more drug friendly scenes like pop music.
Creepy… and yes, this person is older and male…
I would like to think that they’re above that sort of thing, though, idks…
I know another girl thats gotten creeped out by him before…@General Lighting 554250 wrote:
In Holland a girl was rejected for modelling. because her hips were 92cm rather the 90cm expected. But Dutch girls usually are quite tall, so the “ideal supermodel” would look like a stick insect TBH. And most blokes would not bother about the extra 20mm (TBH I would prefer a slightly fuller figure girl, as at least she might like food).
There was a survey done where a group of men were divided two equal size half groups and shown pictures of women of varying sizes and asked to decide which were most attractive. One group of men were fed during the experiment, the other were left hungry. The hungry ones were attracted to the bigger girls :laugh_at:
Ouch, my hips are about 92 cms, maybe a little bit smaller. And I’m 5’6″ ….it’s completely ridiculous that 2 centimeters would make such a big difference -_-
It wasn’t too terribly long ago that being fuller figured WAS considered most attractive… idk… I mean, I think you should just be in shape/healthy…. and past that it shouldn’t make so much of a difference…
That’s hilarious about the experiment, lololol…. xD
No, I just literally cannot runway model. Not tall enough, and I’d have to be able to wear a size 0 sample size… which… I’m small but not that small. I don’t think I’ve been brainwashed; because I don’t want to BE unhealthily skinny by starving or being anorexic… But if I was naturally that skinny and tall (and people are, not common though, a lot models are actually anorexic) I’d be able to model. Those are the industry standards. But I would never try to fit myself to those standards… hence why I do alternative modelling…
Thinking about… futility.
How we, as people, fight so hard to define ourselves… to figure out how we, as individuals, are distinct from others.
But in the end, no matter what you do, everyone dies, everyone fades away from memory…It scares me, while at the same time it inspires me to do something worthwhile with my life. If my life is to be lived, it may as well be lived well, in the manner in which *I* want to live.
It also makes me want to do something in life that I WILL be remembered for… however, the reality is, that would be very difficult to acheive.*shrug*
I’m 5’6″…. so… not really short, for a female.
I wish I was taller though… I’ve kinda always wished I had typical “model” measurements but… alas, not to be. (not saying I’m unhappy with myself, I like me, but I just can’t model because of height/the severe thinness of todays models)@The Psyentist 554171 wrote:
I’m a mosher/rocker converted to raver. In terms of electronic music I predominantly listen to hardstyle and a bit of dubstep every now and then. Most 80s and 90s electropop and trance is good too. I have a massively varied but peculiar taste in music. If your music makes me nod my head or even better headbang then you’ve won me over. Unfortunately your music does not have this effect on me but I’m sure it will on some; just as some of my music that I think is ace probably makes a lot of people cringe lol.
Haha! Nice. I’m curious what you’d think about some of our other songs… we’re doing some harder stuff as well as the lighter vocal trancey dub stuff. *Don’t you just love my categorizations?*
I’ve only posted the lighter stuff because thats primarily the area I’m in charge of ;P the other half of BluStar actually wants to experiment with mixing metal ish elements with electronic… maybe having scream type vocals mixed into a really hard electronic song. I’m not quite a believer yet because I’ve never been into metal. But again, out of curiosity, what do you think about that idea? lame or no?

one of my online Dutch lessons actually uses the word “popdinosaurussen” to describe such types..
the tune itself would easily make the daytime playlists of European youth orientated radio stations.
The only thing it may need is slightly “clearer” mastering as mentioned in the other thread if you are aiming for this sort of airplay the target audience is often listening at work on in cars where loudness at top and midrange is more of a priority to gt the sound heard.
I personally would not take any notice of so called “industry professionals” nowadays. Most of them are or were only in the business for power/money and their position and importance has been eclipsed by IT professionals as digital technology means skills are transferrable. their only use nowadays is for live performances and some studio recording but because of the bullying , misogyny and excessive drug use the industry has become associated with many councils and investors want nothing to do with the music/entertainment industry any more as its not worth the hassle. The only reason the USA is currently having a boom in EDM is the councils are skint and therefore venues are relatively cheap to hire and many European DJ’s and producers have been expressing warnings that a similar boom happened in Europe in the 1990s but was followed by a big crash due to safety incidents at large crowd events.
Of course it has not made EDM disappear from Europe but its a much smaller and leaner industry now than many realise. So the big levels of management simply are not required, which makes a lot of these types very bitter as what were dream jobs to them have disappeared and they are having to get normal day jobs.
In my country (UK) the commercial part of creative industries in London has been downsized to such an extent it is actually merged in with the rest of the telecoms and IT industries (when the size of it is reported to the EU etc) to make it look bigger than it actually is (so these old dinosaurs can squeeze the last bit of cash from middle class parents paying for University courses for their kids).
if you want to get your music on the radio you are better off directly approaching a DJ/presenter especially on a small local or community station, especially as community stations are just starting out in the USA and will be eager to get music of all sorts.
Thankyou for taking the time to say all this!! I would definitely agree– in America, we are in the middle of our EDM “bubble” I believe… its financially beneficial to be “in charge” or a promoter right now, just because of how many mainstreamers are attracted to the industry right now. But all things come to an end and I’m actually excited for it to get “leaner” again… the music scene is always better when it is being run by the people that actually care about the music, not just whats popular… its gotten to a ridiculous level over here… dubstep… dubstep EVERYWHERE.
Not entirely sure what community stations are; but I’ll definitely research it and take a look at how I can best put forth the music I make. ^.^

Good point… America seems to be kinda way behind Europe in the music area…. we’re in the middle of our “bubble” of EDM popularity, I’m sure a lot of promoters and the like will be in big trouble once it pops.

If they’ve been making music for 20+ years, then why don’t they give you some pointers rather than just trying to shoot you down all the time? Also, because they’ve been making so long, just wanted to check that the dickhead’s not some old rocker who wouldn’t have a first clue about anything that didn’t have screaming guitars in it? If so, kick him in the bollocks and tell him what a clueless cunt of a dinosaur he is!
On another note, even if he’s involved with local production companies, due to the internet, you attract a much wider, global audience than previous generations could – hell, most of us are in the UK and we’re listening!
Good point…! This person actually owes their day job to me ironically. Haha. I get free entry into their shows as thanks… They’ve always been super critical of me personally, because I guess they think it drives me to succeed… they’re not a rocker at all; been into electronic music for a loooong time though. Honestly sometimes I wonder if they think I have potential, so they’re trying to piss me off into getting better. LOL.
On the other hand, I’m a sucessful gogo dancer so maybe they just want me to not focus on music instead. LOL.

Hey Galaxzee, it sounds as if a few elements (Bass, vocals, piano and pads) are off key with each other and the many key changes throughout the song seem to contradict one another at points. I’m no musical theorist but that’s how it sounds to me.
hey! thanks for the feedback. I’d agree its not quite complete/meshed sounding… there aren’t really any key changes as far as I’m aware in the song, but as it *was* written late at night I’ll go over it and make sure, hehe. Definitely agree it needs to “mesh” better… we’ve been using some less than stellar samples; but just got a SHIT TON of better ones from a friend;;; do you think changing the actual sound of the instruments themselves might help a little with the things that don’t seem to go together?
@know_hope 554093 wrote:
it sounds pretty good to me. i like the contrast of styles; nice trance vibe but with glitchy dubstep elements. being honest, i’d say it sounds about 80% there. i think its difficult to make a really studio savvy mix. just keep going and listen to all the elements. the ideas feel good, it just sounds a small step away from a fully realised sound, comparing to radio. i couldn’t make this. well done 🙂
thanks! I definitely agree… this was one sitting over a sleepless night; so a couple more sessions should see it in a more finished spot. its probably a bit too early to be asking for feedback; i just felt so bad from this random negative feedback lol… feeling a bit better about it now though, so its time for some hard work in the beat lab (yeahhhh don’t laugh, I call it ‘THE BEAT LAB’) 😛

Don’t get stressed by it mate, fuck the haters! At the end of the day, some people would rather give others a hard time than try to do anything constructive themselves – it makes them feel big and important. I’ve had a few shitty comments from people before, but as long as they’re few and far between and the vast majority like what you do, don’t let it get to you. Like I said, fuck the haters dude! Nice tune too by the way, your voice is spot on. 🙂
Good point… I’m gonna jump on the ‘fuck the haters’ bandwagon and just not really care anymore! Everyone has an opinion; why should I listen to the pretty much only negative feedback I’ve recieved? I think I might use what they said about certain things in the song to fix it more but the whole “you should just give up” vibe I got, well… FUCK IT. Not gonna happen. 😛
Thanks for listening; this was done in one sleep deprived nighttime session so it definitely needs more work but i think its a decent start. 😀

Firstly, stop taking any notice of what whoever this person is saying. Not even music? It clearly IS music as it has all the elements that are required to make a series of sounds into music.
As per what others have said, it’s not really the type of music that I would listen too but other than that it seems well constructed, you have a nice voice, the beats are good and it has the popularly wampy wamp dubsteppy sounds in parts of it which seem to be popular. It all sounds very well produced and the lyrics (although not to my taste) are well written and executed.
thanks! call me ridiculous but it really helps to read what people have to say about my music online. haha. if you hate it, its not so personal, and if you like it, well… hey you have no obligation to make me “feel better” so it is almost more meaningful than a friend’s compliments. haha. we still have a ways to go on this but thanks for listening ^.^

we try to be “productive procrastinators”… if I hate a song’s guts at the moment, I’ll switch it over to my partner in crime; or start working on a different song. it helps a lot!! less roadblocks. xDAugust 8, 2013 at 12:52 am in reply to: We Are Star Stuff (work in progress) ..Can I get some feedback? 😛 #1275072@General Lighting 554173 wrote:
Other than the level issues that you have already acknowledged (which at some points mean your file is clipped and would cause the distortion/muddy sound on less good hi fi and speakers) it is a good vocal track, in line with a lot of good EDM currently produced in America (which crosses over more into electro and with the dubstep elements than the older and faster European trance sound).
I listened to it on my day job PC and a cheap set of Philips headphones I bought on sale at ASDA (British equivalent of Walmart) simply because they reminded me of a similar pair I bought in 1990 and it still sounded good.
I did put it through the inbuilt Adobe Audition compressor/limiter which improved the levelling to some point. TBH next time I do a North Sea Rollers show on PVR I am more than likely to play it at some point.
awesome :))
thanks for listening!i’ve never used Adobe Audition… good program? always looking for more tools!

Oh god, I listen to the full EP every time I get in the car. I’m going to hate it soon. Hehe. It isn’t so bad right now; because we’re still picking out things to work on from the songs… so there’s a goal… but when its all done and only levelling remains…. yeah. its going to be bad. haha.

thanks! yeah gonna keep at it… I figure its good motivation to prove them wrong haha…

dont bother listening to anyone who is purely negative they are just winding you up!
thanks, haha… this person has been making music for like 20+ years so they have a right for an opinion, i guess– its just the way it was said. On the plus side, its made me upset and determined to prove them wrong… but they’re involved with the local production companies, which is partly why its so depressing. they’re one of the people we need to impress with our music and it isn’t working out that way so far, haha… thanks for listening.

Heya again. Still not to my taste but again I was able to listen to the entire track. If a piece of music really upsets my ears I’ll turn it off pretty quickly usually. I think my personal issue with it is that it sounds a bit too mainstream pop dancey overall. I like the experimental part in respect of the fact you’re trying to be creative and show something different. But again it doesn’t do it for me. I wouldn’t say it is bad music it is simply a style I don’t like.
Hopefully you won’t take that too negatively:wink:
I don’t take it negatively at all! Everyone has different tastes; we’d be crazy to try to make something “universal” enough that everyone’s happy with it… even if you’re not personally a fan, feedback is feedback!! haha out of curiosity what kind of styles of music are your favorite? curious

i think I was just blasting it so loud it was buzzy. that and the leveling/compression need to be worked on… we’re still figuring out side chaining and compressing around the voice and all that lovely stuff. its kinda overwhelming. Personally I’m much more focused on actual writing than mastering/levelling so its a new area to get into.
